Villa Necchi Campiglio was built between 1932 and 1935 by the Milanese architect Piero Portaluppi and was later updated by Mr. Thomas Buzzi. It is a sumptuous villa located in the heart of the city, surrounded by a large garden and equipped with a tennis court and a swimming pool.
The main building of Portaluppi masterpiece is the house in via Mozart, which paves the way for rationalism into architecture. It combines the creative imagination of the designer and the persistence of elements from the previous Déco style.
This stunning residential complex was luckily spared by the bombings during the war and was never modified during the time; it has come to us perfectly intact, reflecting the sophisticated taste and the upper-class status of the owners.
The members of the Necchi Campiglio family were well-known representatives of the Lombard industrial haute bourgeoisie; they led their lives with grace and elegance and their house is the result of the harmonious fusion of architecture, decorative arts, furniture and works of art.
The large rooms, the precious materials and the large areas used as a boardroom contribute to describe the city of Milan in the first half of the XX century, with its rituals, its pleasures and its labels.
At the same time, the fervour of the daily household activities and the lives of those who contributed to these rites from behind the scenes are properly witnessed by the sequence of service rooms, offices, kitchens and bathrooms, which are still equipped with the original furniture.
Two major donations enrich the visit: the extraordinary collection of Claudia Gian Ferrari with art works of the early XX century by Sironi, Martini, de Chirico and others and the refined collection of paintings and decorative arts from the XVIII century of Alighiero ed Emilietta De 'Micheli, which include paintings by Canaletto, Tiepolo and Rosalba Carriera.
