Claudia Gian Ferrari is a well-known art historian and art critic who also owns an important gallery, mostly dedicated to the Italian painting of the first half of the 20th century. Her father Ettore was a passionate art scholar too. Besides running its own gallery, Ettore Gian Ferrari worked for the Venetian Biennale and was also involved in contemporary, avant-garde theatre. Now Claudia has decided to lend to FAI the most important nucleus of the private collection she has gathered with her father, in order to expose it at Villa Necchi Campiglio.
Being all made around the first five decades of the 20th century, this group of paintings and sculptures matches perfectly with the image of the Villa’s interiors and marvellously enriches the existing collections. The names are those of the great Italian artists of the time: from Mario Sironi to Giorgio de Chirico and from Giorgio Morandi to the sculptors Arturo Martini e Adolfo Wildt. Among the pieces, we can quote an impressive La famiglia del pastore (The sheperd’s family), by Sironi, which was once owned by the famous architect Marcello Piacentini and L’amante morta (The dead lover), by Arturo Martini, which depicts the intimate sorrow of a young lady abandoned by her partner and therefore definitively uninterested in life and in its transitory vanity.
Claudia is very tied to her works, which she had been living along with so far and she has asked the permission to spend some time alone with the pieces, from time to time. To satisfy her moving request, FAI has reserved to the collector one of the bedroom on the first floor of the villa: an agreement which confirms the friend basis on which this generous donation took place.
