Grumello Castle
Montagna in Valtellina, Sondrio
Donated by Società Enologica Valtellinese, 1987

The fortress is a rare example of a "twinned" castle, with residential and military sections.

Two small forts face each other on the top of a hill (known locally as “grummo”) dominating Valtellina near Sondrio. The eastern part of rocky peak, with low vegetation that also includes rare species, is home to tower that was the military site as such; the residential area to the west is more complex and articulated. An unusual example of a "twinned" castle, it was built at the start of the XIV century by Corrado de Piro only to be reduced to ruin by the Grigionesi in 1526, when they invaded the region.
