Velate tower
Varese
Donated by Zambeletti, 1989

The Velate tower, an imposing presence, dominates the village of the same name just outside the gates of Varese.

Built in the XI century on the higher land dominating the road towards Lake Maggiore to protect the southern part of the walls of Velate - a village fortified since late-Roman times ("castrum de Vellate") - the tower was rendered ineffective during the struggles between Milan and Como in the XII century. The original imposing four-side tower, 25 metres high, today has only one complete side, reinforced by the body of the staircase incorporated into the structure, and part of another side.
The tower is a landmark in the hillside landscape around Varese and, for local people, has important symbolic value.
