A circa 500 mt sul livello del mare, il paese gode di una posizione panoramica sulle valli che portano alla Maremma grossetana e al mare. Alle spalle i monti che la separano dall’Amiata e dal Monte Labbro. Nelle giornate terse si possono ammirare l’isola d’Elba e la Corsica. Il paese ha origini etrusche, ma è nell’alto Medioevo che si formano il “Borgo di Sopra”, con il castello, e il “Borgo di Sotto”, conglomerato di case che corrono attorno alle mura medioevali. La posizione ha contribuito al suo sviluppo prima con Siena e successivamente con Firenze (vedi l’antica fonte a cisterna di epoca medicea presente nella Piazza del Popolo). Nel secolo scorso Cana era paese di agricoltori, pastori e minatori (Baccinello). Oggi è un luogo di fermento dove l’associazione Pro-Loco, famiglie giovani e piccoli imprenditori scommettono sulla qualità della vita ed il suo potenziale turistico, di valorizzazione all’insegna dell’eco-sostenibilità, delle sue bellezza naturalistiche, delle tradizioni storiche ed eno-gastronomiche. L'associazione Pro-loco Cana sostiene i seguenti progetti: • Ripristinare i sentieri del lavoro verso i campi della Maremma, della miniera e verso la zona dell’Amiata per connettersi alla sentieristica esistente; • creazione di una mappa di comunità; • organizzazione di eventi tematici dedicati alle tradizioni culinarie del luogo e in sintonia con le tradizioni paesane; • raccontare la storia e la vita del paese nel ‘900 attraverso varie forme artistiche; Partecipando al censimento FAI e votando Cana come un tuo luogo del cuore, potrai aiutare la nostra comunità ad ottenere un poco di visibilità e partecipare ai bandi FAI nel 2021, dove proporre uno dei progetti selezionati tra quelli di cui sopra. ENGLISH Cana is a village at circa 500 mt above sea level and enjoys a panoramic position over the Grosseto maremma valley. Gently nestled on a hill Cana is surrounded by Mount Amiata and Mount Labbro and looks at the seaside where during clear days it is possible to admire the silhouette of Corsica and Elba island. The village has Etruscan origins and during the Middle Ages the “Borgo di Sopra” (with the castle and the fortified walls) and “Borgo di Sotto” (a group of houses that were running around the walls) were built as a testimony to a small but important feud. Its dominating position contributed to its economic development and made it interesting to the eyes of Siena first, and then to the Florentine Signoria as witnessed by the Medicean cistern placed in the main square of the village. During the Twentieth century Cana was a town with circa 1000 inhabitants mainly employed in the agricultural and mining sectors (considering the nearby mine of pyrite in Baccinello). Nowdays is a village with a great social ferment where the local inhabitants association (Pro-Loco), young families and small entrepreneurs are targeting a high quality life for the locals and tourists, the promotion of the natural and cultural heritage with the aim to increase a slow and sustainable tourism and social entrepreneurial activities. Projects that the Pro-loco intends to bring forward in 2020 and 2021 are related to: • Restoring old trails from Cana to the Maremma valley, to the mines and to the mountains around the Mount Amiata (mapping, maintenance and promotion) • Creating a community map to promote the village and surroundings; • Organising cultural events and festivals devoted to the food and cultural traditions; • Sharing the history and the stories related to the life of the village during the last century through various artistic means. By participating to the FAI survey and voting for Cana as your Place of the Heart you can help our community to obtain visibility and collect the 2000 votes that allow our participation to the 2021 call with one of the above-mentioned projects.
